Download the Updated Lutz Sales Chemical Resistance Guide Today!

We've just created a handy guide for you to reference when looking at material chemical resistance issues for your application. The Lutz Sales Chemical Resistance Guide has been revamped into a downloadable *.pdf for your convenience!

This chart is offered only as a general guide, indicating the suitability of various elastomers for service in these chemicals and fluids. The ratings are based for the most part on published literature of various polymer suppliers, rubber manufacturers, and in some cases, the considered opinion of experienced compounders. We cannot guarantee their accuracy nor assume any responsibility for use thereof.

We recommend that you always Test your materials for your particular application before moving to production.

Are BioFuels Destroying Your O-Rings?

Download Our Free DuPont Viton® Whitepaper On BioFuel Resistance Today!

The following is an excerpt from our Free White Paper provided by DuPont.

"The increasing use of aggressive biodiesel and alcohol components in motor fuels is posing new challenges for companies that produce, blend, transport and dispense them.

Relative to other fuel components, biodiesel has unstable chemistry subject to degradation which is exacerbated by contamination as it moves along the distribution chain. The aggressive, contaminated fuel attacks hydrocarbon rubbers such as the nitrile rubbers that are widely used in hose, gaskets, seals and other parts of fuel-handling equipment.

Ethanol-containing fuels pose another challenge - permeation - and nitrile rubbers again fall short. Excessive permeation not only increases emissions of volatile organic compounds but also loses valuable fuel."

This Free White Paper includes charts and graphs detailing how Viton® is your best choice for BioFuel resistance in your sealing, gasket and o-ring applications.

What is an O Ring?

An o-ring is an "O" shaped object usually made of an elastic material known as an elastomer. O-rings serve to create a seal between two mechanical components by preventing leakage and maintaining pressure through deforming to the shape of their surrounding cavity. This simple, cost-effective device was patented by 72 year old inventor and machinist Niels Christensen in 1937. His design proved critical to the US WWII effort, spreading rapidly throughout industry.

More about O-rings:

o-rings

Due to the elastic nature of their elastomeric material (called a rubber compound), o-rings exhibit the ability to be stretched larger than originally molded under stress, but return to original size once that stress is removed. Stretching an o-ring introduces stress at its contact surfaces. Fluid (gas or liquid) remains contained so long as the pressure of the fluid doesn't exceed the contact stress of the o-ring.

O-rings are usually characterized by material (or compound), durometer (Shore A hardness) and dash number. The dash number refers to a specific inner diameter (I.D.), outer diameter (O.D.), and cross section (C.S.) based on the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Aerospace Size Standard for O-rings, or simply AS568 standard sizes. Other size standards do exist, including metric (in millimeters rather than inches) and Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS)

Radial O-ring Groove Design: One popular form of the o-ring is the radial or radial gland design. Variables to keep in mind are cross section (CS) diametral squeeze, gland depth (c), groove width (w),and radius (r).

Axial O-ring Groove Design: Another form of o-ring is the axial design. The variables involved are gland depth (c), groove width liquids (w) or groove width vacuum and gases (w1), and groove radius (r).

Don't let a 5 cent seal cost your Company Thousands!

Case Study

We recently obtained a competitor's sample (see picture) for quotation from a customer located in Illinois. This customer was looking for cost savings for several items and did not describe the problems they were having with our competitor's product for this particular seal application at the time of quotation. Apparently the competitor's product was failing due to poor workmanship (parting line and flow marks) which was causing leaks in the application and therefore had to be 100% inspected to sort out the product with gross defects. This was very time consuming and costly for the customer, adding some $30 to fix each unit with the defective part. Not only were we able to show a cost savings for the unit price of the product, but we were able to provide a product with superior workmanship eliminating the need for 100% sorting.

What makes the difference: Our Custom Molded Products are produced using only advanced technologies.

The molds are produced from directly inputing the parts dimensions into the computer software and the cavities are produced using CNC machinery. Only high grade steel is selected to produce the mold and the CNC accuracy between cavities ensures consistent quality from cavity to cavity.

All materials are controlled using Rheometer curves to ensure consistency from batch to batch and full traceability is maintained for each lot of material.

With each first run of material we will provide an ISIR showing conformity of all dimensions to the print. In addition, PPAP's can be provided to meet 1.33 Cpk as a standard. For more stringent automotive requirements we offer Doss and Basler Video Inspection.

Our reliability rate from first print review to the approval of ISIR samples on first submission is extremely high; approaching 99%. This means there are no hiccups or costly delays to your new product's development or platform.

The process is easy; you provide a drawing either by e-mail or fax and we will provide a quotation within 48 hours.

Examples of our custom molded rubber products include but are not limited to: custom seals, isolators, grommets, sleeves, bellows, metal to rubber bonded washers, balls and diaghragms.
